Shelby County is the county in the U.S. state of Tennessee that is the farthest to the west.

As of the census in 2020, there were 929,744 people living there.

It has the most people and the most land area of all the 95 counties in the state. Memphis, a port on the Mississippi River and the second largest city in Tennessee, is the county seat.

The county was named after Isaac Shelby, who was the governor of Kentucky from 1750 to 1826.

It is one of only two counties left in Tennessee where most of the people are African American. The other is Haywood County.

The county has a total area of 785 square miles (2,030 km2), of which 763 square miles (1,980 km2) are land and 22 square miles (57 km2) (2.8%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

It has the most land area of any county in Tennessee.

Tennessee’s lowest point is on the Mississippi River in Shelby County, just outside of Memphis. This is where the river leaves Tennessee and flows into Mississippi.
