List of all cities and towns in San Juan County
In the far northwest part of the U.S. state of Washington, there is a county called Condado de San Juan. It is on the Salish Sea.
As of the census in 2020, there were 17,788 people living there.
Friday Harbor, which is on San Juan Island, is the county seat and the only city.
The county was made on October 31, 1873, from Whatcom County.
It is named after the San Juan Islands, which were called after the Viceroy of New Spain, Juan Vicente de Güemes, 2nd Count of Revillagigedo.
Even though there are no state roads on the islands themselves, the ferry routes that serve the islands are part of the state highway system.
The US Census Bureau says that the county covers 621 square miles (1,610 km2), of which 174 square miles (450 km2) are land and 447 square miles (1,160 km2) are water, or 72%.
It has the smallest land area of any county in Washington and is the fourth-smallest county in terms of total size.
