The population was 921,130 at the time of the census, up from 795,225 in 2010, making it the second-most populous county in Washington, behind King County, and the 60th-most populous in the United States.

Tacoma is the county seat and the major city.

The assembly of Oregon Territory established Thurston County on December 22, 1852, and named it after U.S. President Franklin Pierce.

Pierce County is part of the Seattle metropolitan region (formerly the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, WA, MSA).

The county has a total area of 1,806 square miles (4,680 km2), of which 1,670 square miles (4,300 km2) is land and 137 square miles (350 km2) (7.6%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
