The US Census Bureau says that the county is 5,027 square miles (13,020 km2) in size, with 5,010 square miles (13,000 km2) of land and 17 square miles (44 km2) of water (0.3%).
It has the fourth-largest land area and the fifth-largest total area of any county in Montana.
In the county is a part of Custer National Forest.
