It was founded on February 11, 1901, and Montana number plates start with the number 29.

As of the census in 2020, there were 8,329 people living there.[2] Forsyth is the county seat.

The US Census Bureau says that the county is 5,027 square miles (13,020 km2) in size, with 5,010 square miles (13,000 km2) of land and 17 square miles (44 km2) of water (0.3%).

It has the fourth-largest land area and the fifth-largest total area of any county in Montana.

In the county is a part of Custer National Forest.
