Wolf Point is the county seat.
Roosevelt County was formed in 1919 by the Montana Legislature from a portion of Sheridan County.
The name is a tribute to former President Theodore Roosevelt, who died earlier that year.
The county has a total area of 2,369 square miles (6,140 km2), of which 2,355 square miles (6,100 km2) is land and 15 square miles (39 km2) (0.6%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
The Fort Peck Indian Reservation encompasses three-fourths of the county’s land area.
