Roberts County is a county in South Dakota, United States.
The population was 10,280 at the time of the 2020 census.
Sisseton is the county seat.
The county was named after either S. G. Roberts of Fargo, North Dakota, or Solomon Robar, an early French fur trader in the area.
It was founded on March 8, 1883, and was fully operational by August 6, that same year. Its boundaries were changed once, in 1885.
Roberts County is located in the northeastern corner of South Dakota.
Its eastern border is shared with Minnesota (across the Bois de Sioux River), and its northern border is shared with North Dakota.
Cottonwood Slough flows south, draining the county’s upper reaches into the River. The terrain is made up of rolling hills that are used for agriculture.
The terrain slopes to the east, with its highest point at 2,047 feet (624 meters) above sea level.
Roberts County is 1,136 square miles (2,940 km2) in size, with 1,101 square miles (2,850 km2) of land and 35 square miles (91 km2) (3.1%) of water.
The Traverse Gap is located along the Minnesota border in eastern Roberts County.
The Lake Traverse Indian Reservation encompasses the majority of the county.
