The county was started in 1856 and is named for Spencer Roane.
On March 11, 1856, Roane County was made by a law passed by the Virginia General Assembly.
It was named after Spencer Roane, a judge from Virginia.
On April 4, 1762, he was born in Essex County. Spencer, the county seat, is also named after Judge Roane.
