The county was named for Richmond newspaper publisher Thomas Ritchie by the Virginia General Assembly in 1843.

The county has a total area of 454 square miles (1,180 km2), of which 452 square miles (1,170 km2) is land and 1.7 square miles (4.4 km2) (0.4%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
