Geography

Richmond County lies in the Central Savannah River Area on Georgia’s eastern border, where the fall line separates the Piedmont from the Coastal Plain. The Savannah River forms the county’s entire northeastern boundary with South Carolina; smaller streams including Butler Creek and Rae’s Creek drain the county toward the river. History

Richmond County was created on February 5, 1777, as one of Georgia’s eight original counties, formed from part of colonial St. Paul Parish. It is named for Charles Lennox, 3rd Duke of Richmond, a British peer who publicly opposed the Crown’s war against the American colonies. Augusta, laid out decades earlier in 1736 and named for Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, became the county seat and served briefly as Georgia’s state capital during the Revolutionary War era. In 1996, Augusta’s city government and Richmond County’s government consolidated into a single entity, one of the earlier city-county mergers in the modern South; Blythe and Hephzibah opted out and remain independently incorporated.
