It is in the northwest corner of the state.

Ottawa is the county seat.
The county was made in 1820, and in 1834 it was put together.
It is named after Israel Putnam, who was a colonial hero in the French and Indian War and a general in the American Revolutionary War.
The Blanchard River runs through the county and was an important way for the first European-American settlers to get around.
The county has a total area of 484 square miles (1,250 km2), of which 483 square miles (1,250 km2) are land and 1.8 square miles (4.7 km2) (0.4%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The county is crossed by the Blanchard River.
