Its county centre, or shire town, is the town of Chelsea.

Orange County was one of the first counties in the state. It was set up on February 2, 1781.

The county covers 692 square miles (1,790 km2), of which 687 square miles (1,780 km2) are land and 5.2 square miles (13 km2) (0.8%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Orange County is close to the state’s geographic centre.
