Lamoille County was created by the Vermont legislature in 1835 out of territory taken from Orleans, Franklin, Washington and Chittenden Counties, and was formally organized the following year, 1836. Its name is traditionally traced to a mapping error: 17th-century French explorers reportedly labeled the river “La Mouette” (the gull), which later mapmakers rendered as “Lamoille.” Stowe’s development as a ski destination, beginning with rope tows on Mount Mansfield in the 1930s, reshaped the county’s economy through the 20th century and remains its defining modern chapter.
