Oglala Lakota County (formerly Shannon County until May 2015) is located in southwestern South Dakota.
The population was 13,672 at the time of the 2020 census.
Oglala Lakota County lacks a functioning county seat; Hot Springs in neighboring Fall River County serves as the county’s administrative center.
The county was established in 1875 as part of the Dakota Territory, but it is still unorganized.
Pine Ridge is its largest community.
The county is entirely contained within the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and includes a portion of Badlands National Park.
It is one of five South Dakota counties that is entirely surrounded by Indian reservations.
The county covers an area of 2,097 square miles (5,430 km2), of which 2,094 square miles (5,420 km2) is land and 2.8 square miles (7.3 km2) is water (0.1%).
The county includes the Little White River’s headwaters.
