One of the five counties in the U.S. state of Rhode Island is called Newport County.
As of the census in 2020, there were 85,643 people living there.
It is also one of Rhode Island’s seven regions. In 1703, the county was made.
Newport County, like the other counties in Rhode Island, no longer has any government functions (other than serving as a boundary for court administration and sheriff’s corrections).
All of these jobs are now done in Rhode Island either by the state government or by the cities and towns there.
Newport County is part of the Providence-Warwick, RI-MA Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is part of the larger Boston-Worcester-Providence, MA-RI-NH-CT Combined Statistical Area.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 314 square miles (810 km2), of which 102 square miles (260 km2) are land and 211 square miles (550 km2) are water, or 67%.
