New Orleans (French: La Nouvelle-Orléans, Spanish: Nueva Orleans) is a combined city and parish along the Mississippi River in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Louisiana.
According to the 2020 U.S. census, it has a population of 383,997, making it the most populous city in Louisiana, the third most populous city in the Deep South, and the 12th most populous city in the southeastern United States.
As a major port, New Orleans is seen as an economic and business center for the Gulf Coast of the United States as a whole.
The area of the city is 350 square miles (910 km2), of which 169 square miles (440 km2) are land and 181 square miles (470 km2) are water, or 52%.
