Natchitoches is a small city in Louisiana, United States, and the parish seat of Natchitoches Parish.
The community was named after the indigenous Natchitoches people and was founded in 1714 as part of French Louisiana by Louis Juchereau de St. Denis.
Natchitoches was incorporated on February 5, 1819, following Louisiana’s statehood in 1812. It is the oldest permanent settlement on the Louisiana Purchase land.
Northwestern State University is located in Natchitoches. Nacogdoches, Texas is its sister city.
The city has a total area of 25.1 square miles (65 km2), of which 21.6 square miles (56 km2) are land and 3.6 square miles (9.3 km2) (14.21%) are covered by water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
