The county was established in 1909 and incorporated in 1911.
It is named after Arthur C. Mellette, the last Governor of Dakota Territory and the first Governor of South Dakota.
The White River flows eastward along Mellette County’s north boundary line.
The Little White River flows through central Mellette County before emptying into the White River.
The terrain is semi-arid rolling hills, with ponds and small lakes in the northern part.
The majority of the land is used for agriculture.
The terrain slopes northeast, with the highest point at 2,779 feet (847 meters) ASL in the SW corner.
The county is 1,311 square miles (3,400 km2) in size, with 1,307 square miles (3,390 km2) of land and 3.6 square miles (9.3 km2) (0.3%) of water.
