Eddyville is the county seat.
The county was made out of Caldwell County, Kentucky, in 1854.
It was named for Chittenden Lyon, who was a congressman at the time.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county is 257 square miles (670 km2) in size, with 214 square miles (550 km2) of land and 43 square miles (110 km2) of water, or 17%.
