Smithland is the county seat, and Ledbetter is the biggest town in the county.The county was made in 1798 from land taken from Christian County.
It is named for Robert R. Livingston, who was on the Committee of Five that wrote the U.S. Declaration of Independence.
During the American Civil War, the county was very pro-Confederate, and many men joined the Confederate Army.
Livingston County is a part of the Micropolitan Statistical Area of Paducah, KY and IL.
It is a dry or prohibition county, except for Grand Rivers, which decided in 2016 to allow alcohol sales.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county is 342 square miles (890 km2) in size, with 313 square miles (810 km2) of land and 29 square miles (75 km2) of water, or 8.5%.
The Ohio River forms the western line with Illinois.
