Meriwether Lewis, an explorer who died and was buried near Hohenwald in 1809, is remembered by the name of the county.
In 1843, parts of Perry, Hickman, Lawrence, Maury, and Wayne counties were put together to make Lewis County.It was named after Lewis and Clark Expedition explorer Meriwether Lewis.
Lewis’s grave is in the exact middle of the county.
Powhatan Gordon put forward a bill in the Tennessee State Senate to make it happen.
