Lewis County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States.

As of the census in 2020, there were 12,582 people living there.

Hohenwald is the county seat.

Meriwether Lewis, an explorer who died and was buried near Hohenwald in 1809, is remembered by the name of the county.

In 1843, parts of Perry, Hickman, Lawrence, Maury, and Wayne counties were put together to make Lewis County.It was named after Lewis and Clark Expedition explorer Meriwether Lewis.

Lewis’s grave is in the exact middle of the county.

Powhatan Gordon put forward a bill in the Tennessee State Senate to make it happen.

The county has a total area of 282 square miles (730 km2), of which 282 square miles (730 km2) are land and 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2) (0.1%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
