Vanceburg is the county seat.
The US Census Bureau says that the county covers a total area of 495 square miles (1,280 km2), of which 483 square miles (1,250 km2) are land and 13 square miles (34 km2) (2.5% of the total area) are water.
The Ohio River makes the northern line between the county and Ohio. It is the only county in Kentucky that has the longest line with a river.
