Geography
Letcher County sits on the Kentucky side of Pine Mountain and Black Mountain, in the rugged coal-country terrain of the eastern Cumberland Plateau. The North Fork Kentucky River rises here and drains most of the county, joined by Rockhouse Creek, Line Fork and other narrow hollows that shaped the county’s settlement pattern of ridge-and-hollow coal camps. Black Mountain, on the Virginia line, is Kentucky’s highest point at 4,145 feet.
Letcher County borders Knott County and Pike County to the north, Harlan County to the south, Perry County to the west, and Wise County, Virginia to the east.

Economy & Local Life
Coal mining shaped Letcher County for more than a century and remains part of the local economy alongside health care, education and small manufacturing. Whitesburg is home to Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College’s Whitesburg campus and to Appalshop, a nonprofit media, arts and education center known for documentary film, radio station WMMT, and archives of regional Appalachian culture. Jenkins was built as a company town by Consolidation Coal Company in the early 1900s and still carries that planned-town layout.
History
Letcher County was formed in 1842 from parts of Harlan, Perry and Pike counties and named for Robert P. Letcher, Kentucky’s governor from 1840 to 1844. The area’s first permanent settlement dates to around 1803. Coal mining arrived with the railroad in the early 1900s and drove decades of growth, followed by long decline as mechanization and market shifts cut jobs. The 1976 Scotia Mine disasters near Oven Fork, which killed 26 miners in two explosions, helped push Congress toward stronger federal mine-safety law. In July 2022, catastrophic flooding across eastern Kentucky caused severe damage and loss of life in Letcher County along the North Fork Kentucky River and its tributaries.
