Letcher County is a county in Kentucky, United States.

The population was 21,548 at the time of the 2020 census.Whitesburg is the county seat.

It was formed in 1842 from Harlan and Perry counties and named for Robert P. Letcher, Kentucky’s Governor from 1840 to 1844.

The county has 25,277 people, 10,085 households, and 7,462 families according to the 2000 census. The population density was 75 people per square mile (29 people per square kilometer).

There were 11,405 dwellings at a rate of 34 per square mile (13/km2).

The county was 98.71% White, 0.51% Black or African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.03% other races, and 0.35% mixed race. Hispanic or Latino people of any race made up 0.44% of the population.
