Charles Town is the county seat.
The county was started in 1801, and it is now part of the greater Washington area.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 212 square miles (550 km2), of which 210 square miles (540 km2) are land and 2.0 square miles (5.2 km2) are water, or 1%.
