Bethany is the county seat.

The county was established on February 14, 1845, and was named after United States Representative Albert G. Harrison of Missouri.

The county has a total area of 726 square miles (1,880 km2), of which 723 square miles (1,870 km2) is land and 3.9 square miles (10 km2) (0.5%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
