Fannin County is a county in the far northeast of the United States, bordering Oklahoma.
Its population was 35,662 as of the 2020 census.
Bonham is the county seat.
The county was named after James Fannin, who led the group of Texans killed during the Texas Revolution in the Goliad Massacre.
The county seat’s namesake, James Bonham, sought Fannin’s assistance for the Battle of the Alamo, but Fannin was unable to provide it.
The county was established in 1837 and incorporated the following year.
Fannin County is located in the state of Texas.
The county has a total area of 899 square miles (2,330 km2), of which 891 square miles (2,310 km2) are land and 8.0 square miles (21 km2) (0.9%) are covered by water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
It is fed by the Bois D’Arc Creek and the Sulphur River.
