The population was 5,527 at the time of the 2020 census.
Walters is the county seat.
When Oklahoma became a state in 1907, the area that is now Cotton County was part of Comanche County.
It was formed in 1912, becoming Oklahoma’s final county, and was named after the county’s primary crop.
Cotton County is part of the Lawton, Oklahoma metro area.
The county has a total area of 642 square miles (1,660 km2), of which 633 square miles (1,640 km2) is land and 9.3 square miles (24 km2) (1.4%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
