Tahlequah, the county seat, is also the Cherokee Nation’s capital.
Cherokee County is part of the Tulsa-Muskogee-Bartlesville, OK combined statistical area, as is the Tahlequah, OK micropolitan statistical area.
The county has a total area of 776 square miles (2,010 km2), of which 749 square miles (1,940 km2) is land and 2.7 square miles (7.0 km2) (3.5%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
