Colorado has Chaffee County. The 2020 census counted 19,476 people. County seat Salida.
Chaffee County’s origin is unclear. The Colorado legislature created Carbonate County from northern Lake County on February 8–10, 1879.
The southern portion of Lake County became Chaffee County on February 10, and Carbonate County became Lake County. “Heart of the Rockies” is Chaffee County. Colorado’s first senator, Jerome B. Chaffee, named it.
The county contains 1,015 square miles (2,630 km2), of which 1,013 square miles (2,620 km2) is land and 1.6 square miles (4.1 km2) (0.2%) is water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
