At the time of the 2020 census, the county’s population was 1,748 people.

Cheyenne Wells is the county seat.

Cheyenne County was formed on March 25, 1889, by the Colorado State Legislature from portions of northeastern Bent County and southeastern Elbert County.

It got its name from the Cheyenne Indians who lived in eastern Colorado.

The county has a total area of 1,781 square miles (4,610 km2), of which 1,778 square miles (4,600 km2) is land and 3.2 square miles (8.3 km2) (0.2%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
