Watonga is the county seat.
The county was part of the Cheyenne-Arapaho land opening in 1892.
By the early 1900s, it had rail lines, and by the 1930s, it had roads.
The county was named after James G. Blaine, an American politician who ran for president as a Republican in 1884 and was Secretary of State under President Benjamin Harrison.
The county has a total area of 939 square miles (2,430 km2), of which 928 square miles (2,400 km2) are land and 10 square miles (26 km2) (1.1%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
