Bell County is a county in the U.S. state of Kentucky’s southeast region.
The population was 24,097 according to the 2020 census. Pineville serves as the county seat.
During the Reconstruction period, the county was constituted from sections of Knox and Harlan counties and expanded from Knox County in 1872.
The county is named after US Representative Joshua Fry Bell. It was initially known as “Josh Bell,” but the Kentucky legislature reduced the name to “Bell” on January 31, 1873.
The county has a total area of 361 square miles (930 km2), of which 359 square miles (930 km2) is land and 2.1 square miles (5.4 km2) (0.6%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
