Pearson is the county seat.
In 1917, parts of Coffee County and Clinch County were put together to make this county.
It is named after Democratic Governor of Georgia from 1894 to 1898, William Yates Atkinson.
At 36%, it had the highest rate of illiteracy of any county in the United States in 2003.
The county has a total area of 345 square miles (890 km2), of which 339 square miles (880 km2) are land and 5.2 square miles (13 km2) (1.5%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
