Arenac County (/rnaek/ AIR–nak) is a county in Michigan, United States.
The population was 15,002 at the time of the 2020 Census.
Standish serves as the county seat.
Arenac County was incorporated in 1883.
Arenac is a combination of the Latin arena and the Native American ac, and was coined by Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, a US Indian Agent and ethnologist.
The words combined mean “a sandy place for good footing.”
The county has a total area of 681 square miles (1,760 km2), of which 363 square miles (940 km2) is land and 317 square miles (820 km2) (47%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
By land area, it is Michigan’s third-smallest county.
Arenac County is located in both Northern Michigan and Central Michigan.
