As of the 2020 Census, there were 8,158 people living there.
This made it the fifth-least populated county in Michigan.
L’Anse is the county seat.
Bishop Frederic Baraga was a Catholic missionary who helped the Ojibwa people in the Michigan Territory. The county is named after him.
Baraga County is home to the L’Anse Indian Reservation of the Ojibwa.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county has a total area of 1,069 square miles (2,770 km2), 898 square miles (2,330 km2) of which are land and 171 square miles (440 km2) of which are water, or 16%.
