Alamosa is the county seat. The Spanish word for “grove of cottonwood trees” is what the county is called.
On March 8, 1913, the Colorado legislature took the northwest part of Costilla County and made Alamosa County out of it.
The county has a total area of 723 square miles (1,870 km2), of which 723 square miles (1,870 km2) are land and 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2) (0.1%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
