Geography
Langtang North covers 1,188 km² in southern Plateau State, on the lower plains below the Jos Plateau escarpment. Jos, the Plateau State capital, lies to the north; the escarpment marks the general boundary between the Jos Plateau highlands and the southern plains that hold Langtang North and its neighbours. Langtang town, the headquarters, holds the LGA secretariat and the Ponzhi Tarok palace, the seat of the Tarok traditional ruler, both near the town centre. The LGA is divided into 14 wards, including Funyalang, Jat, Keller, Kuffen, Kwallak, Kwanpe, Lipchok, Mban/Zamko, Nyer, Pajat, Pil Gani, Pishe/Yashi, Reak and Waroh. The LGA borders Langtang South to the south and has road links with Shendam, Kanam and Wase. The area has a tropical climate, with an average temperature near 27°C (80°F) and about 1,900 mm of rain a year, split between a wet season and a dry season. Langtang North also lies within the Plateau South senatorial district, alongside Langtang South, Mikang, Qua’an Pan, Shendam and Wase. Langtang North is one of the LGAs of Plateau State (all Plateau State LGAs).
Economy & Local Life
The Tarok people form the majority in Langtang North and mainly speak the Tarok language. Christianity and African Traditional Religion are the two major faiths practised across the LGA. Most residents farm, growing groundnuts, millet and guinea corn on the LGA’s agriculturally productive land, and sell surplus produce at markets in Langtang town and the surrounding wards. Community life is organised around ward markets and farming calendars, with wards such as Funyalang, Jat, Keller, Kuffen, Kwallak, Kwanpe, Lipchok, Mban/Zamko, Nyer, Pajat, Pil Gani, Pishe/Yashi, Reak and Waroh each holding their own local trading days. The dry season is the slower period for farm work and the main window for travel and building projects.
Langtang town has a state-owned General Hospital and a branch of Jos University Teaching Hospital, along with Federal Government Girls College and a Government Secondary School. Two dams and a water treatment plant supply the town with water. The LGA also runs Nggapak 93.1 Unity FM, described as Nigeria’s first commercial radio station licensed to a local government. Langtang town is the hometown of Chief Solomon Lar, the first civilian governor of Plateau State, and of several senior Nigerian military officers, including Generals Domkat Bali, Joseph Nanven Garba, Jeremiah Useni and Joshua Dogonyaro, and Air Marshal Jonah Wuyep. In 2014, the LGA’s Zamadede community was affected by communal violence, one of several such incidents recorded across Plateau State’s Middle Belt communities that decade.
Getting There
Langtang town, the LGA headquarters, is reached by paved road from Shendam, Kanam and Wase, as well as from Langtang South immediately to the south. These roads are the main access routes into the LGA from the rest of Plateau State, and most journeys between Langtang town and the outlying wards and villages are also made by road.
