Towns and Localities Today
Mildura, near the county’s northwest corner, is by far its largest town and seat of Mildura Rural City. Ouyen serves the Mallee farms in the county’s centre, and Merbein and Red Cliffs are irrigation towns close to the Murray. Patchewollock and Walpeup are smaller wheat-belt settlements to the south.
Geography
Karkarooc runs between 142°E and 143°E, south of the Murray River, with its southern edge at the 36°S parallel. Lake Tyrrell sits near its eastern border. It borders Millewa to the west, Weeah to the east, Tatchera to the southeast, and Lowan, Borung and Kara Kara to the south.
History
Karkarooc was proclaimed a county on 24 February 1871. Many of its parish names, including Karkarooc itself, come from the local Wergaia and Wemba Wemba languages of the Mallee region.
