St Arnaud, in the county’s southwest, is the largest town and a Northern Grampians Shire service centre. Donald, on the Richardson River in the north, serves Buloke Shire’s southern farms. Avoca and Landsborough are smaller towns near the Pyrenees Ranges.

Kara Kara’s northern edge sits at 36°S, its western boundary near 143°E. It borders Karkarooc to the west, Tatchera to the north and northeast, Borung to the east and southeast, Gladstone to the south and southeast, and Ripon to the south.

Kara Kara was proclaimed a county on 24 February 1871, alongside the other counties of the Wimmera Land District. St Arnaud and Avoca grew from 1850s gold discoveries in the county’s south.
