Towns and Localities Today
Dimboola, on the Wimmera River in the county’s north, is the largest town. Edenhope and Kaniva, both in the southwest near the South Australian border, serve the surrounding grain and grazing country, and Natimuk sits close to Mount Arapiles in the county’s centre.
Geography
Lowan’s northern edge sits at 36°S latitude. It borders Karkarooc and Weeah to the north, Dundas and Follett to the south, and Borung to the east. Several South Australian counties, including Chandos, Buckingham, MacDonnell and Robe, lie across the border to the west.
History
Lowan was proclaimed a county on 24 February 1871, alongside the other counties of the Wimmera Land District. Some parishes, including Bogalara, Dimboola, Dollin and Mockinya, are shared with neighbouring counties.
