Magareng straddles the Vaal River in the southeast of Frances Baard, bordering Dikgatlong to the north and Phokwane to the northeast, with Free State municipalities across the river to the east. The municipality took its Setswana name, meaning roughly “in the middle,” at its formation in 2000, reflecting its position between Kimberley and the Free State border.
