Dikgatlong Local Municipality lies in the Frances Baard District, Northern Cape. The 2022 census recorded 56,967 people over 7,315.5 km², with Barkly West as the seat.
The name is Setswana for “confluence,” a reference to where the Vaal and Harts rivers meet near Delportshoop, a river-crossing point used since at least 1700. Dikgatlong is the largest of the four Frances Baard municipalities by area, though far less populous than Sol Plaatje.

Geography
Dikgatlong straddles the Vaal River in the northeast of Frances Baard, bordering Sol Plaatje to the south and Phokwane and Magareng to the east, with North West and Free State municipalities across the river to the north and east. Vaalbos National Park lies partly within the municipality. The terrain is flat to gently rolling grassland, cut by the Vaal and Harts river valleys that give the district its water and much of its farmland.
Demographics
The population grew from 46,841 at the 2011 census to 56,967 in 2022, an increase of about 22%. Barkly West and the riverside settlement of Delportshoop hold most of that growth, while smaller farm settlements along the Vaal and Harts rivers have stayed roughly stable.
Economy and Local Life
Alluvial diamond digging along the Vaal River shaped the area’s early economy — small-scale diggers still work stretches of riverbed near Barkly West and Delportshoop today. Lime quarrying and processing at Ulco supports industrial jobs, and irrigated farming along the river grows lucerne, maize and vegetables. Vaalbos National Park’s conservation and tourism work adds a smaller income stream on the municipality’s western edge.
Barkly West itself grew up as a river crossing and trading post long before formal diamond mining began further south at Kimberley, and it still serves as a market town for the surrounding farms.
History
The Vaal-Harts confluence at Delportshoop has been a crossing and trading point since at least 1700, well before European settlement, valued for its reliable water in an otherwise dry stretch of grassland. Diamond diggings opened along the river through the 1870s alongside the bigger rush at Kimberley, and Barkly West grew as their service town, later becoming the municipal seat. The lime works at Ulco developed in the 20th century to supply Kimberley’s construction and mining industries, and remain one of the district’s few industrial employers outside farming and mining.
Getting There
The R31 links Barkly West to Kimberley, about 30 km southeast, and continues north toward North West province. Kimberley Airport is the nearest air link, and the municipality also sits close to the N12 corridor running through neighbouring Sol Plaatje. Windsorton and Delportshoop are reached via gravel and secondary tar roads branching off the R31 along the river.
