The county was made in 1858, and in 1884, it was put together.
Lorenzo de Zavala, a Mexican official who signed the Texas Declaration of Independence and was the first vice president of the Republic of Texas, is named after the city of Zavala.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county has a total area of 1,302 square miles (3,370 km2), of which 1,297 square miles (3,360 km2) are land and 4.3 square miles (11 km2) (0.3%) are water.
