Worth County was formed by an act of the Georgia State Assembly on December 20, 1853, from Dooly and Irwin counties, becoming Georgia’s 106th county.
It was named after New York’s Major General William J. Worth.
Tift and Turner counties were formed from pieces of Worth County in 1905.
The county has a total area of 575 square miles (1,490 km2), of which 571 square miles (1,480 km2) is land and 4.1 square miles (11 km2) (0.7%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
