The county was established in 1820 and incorporated in 1824.
It is named after David Williams, one of John AndrĂ©’s captors during the American Revolutionary War.
The county has a total area of 423 square miles (1,100 km2), of which 421 square miles (1,090 km2) is land and 2.1 square miles (5.4 km2) (0.5%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
