Whitman County is a county in the state of Washington in the United States.
As of the census in 2020, there were 47,973 people living there.
Colfax is the county center, and Pullman is its biggest city.
In 1871, the county was made out of Stevens County.
It is named after Marcus Whitman, a Presbyterian missionary who was killed by members of the Cayuse tribe in 1847 along with his wife, Narcissa.
The Pullman, Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area is made up of Whitman County.
The US Census Bureau says that the county has a total area of 2,178 square miles (5,640 km2), of which 2,159 square miles (5,590 km2) are land and 19 square miles (49 km2) (0.9%) are water.
Whitman County is part of the Palouse, an area of the middle Columbia basin that looks like a wide, rolling plain.
