According to the 2020 census, the population is 102,864.
Dalton is the county seat.
On December 30, 1851, the county was established and named after Methodist missionary George Whitefield. The “e” was deleted to reflect how his name is pronounced.
Whitfield County is included in the Chattanooga-Cleveland-Dalton, TN-GA-AL Combined Statistical Area, as does the Dalton, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 291 square miles (750 km2), of which 290 square miles (750 km2) is land and 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2) (0.2%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
