The county was made on December 22, 1857. Before that, it was a part of Habersham County.
It is likely named after Newton County Representative David T. White, who worked with a Habersham County representative to get a bill passed that made the new county.
The county has a total area of 242 square miles (630 km2), of which 241 square miles (620 km2) are land and 1.5 square miles (3.9 km2) (0.6%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
